Special Needs- intro to the challenges families with a special needs loved one face during divorce.
According to the National Survey of Children with Special Health Care Needs; Based on the series of screening questions, a total of 12.8 percent of children under age 18 in the United States, or about 9.4 million children, are estimated to have special health care needs. Children with special health care needs are present in 20 percent of U.S. households with children.
These families face additional stressors that traditional families do not have. Their children face unique medical, intellectual, physical, emotional, or behavioral challenges. Often times the parents are not on the same page when it comes to how they will raise their child. Sadly, these stresses are too big to overcome in their marriage and a divorce becomes likely.
There are layers of complications that are unique to a special needs family. How a settlement statement is written can determine whether that child is still eligible for benefits or loses them due to a lack of awareness and expertise in working with these families.
At this meeting, you will hear from experts in special needs planning, family law, with a special needs child, the role of special needs trusts, and much more on how you can help your clients through this challenging time.
