PSYCHOLOGISTS: Let’s talk about sober sex

Name: Tracey Duncan BustleCategory: Lifestyle and Fitness

Email: [email protected]

Media Outlet: Bustle

Deadline: 10:00 AM EST – 25 May

Query: One of the biggest fears I hear in 12 step groups from newly
sober folks is that they’re scared to date and have sex sober.
Because, let’s be honest, sex is vulnerable and if you’ve been
using liquid courage to fuel your thirst for years, that kind of
vulnerability may feel terrifying. I want to to write about all
the ways sobriety has helped my sex life — it helped me get in
touch with my kinks, it helped me create healthy boundaries, it
made my sex life regret-less, my orgasms are way more intense,
etc — and also to a psych about the benefits of soberly
exploring your sexuality.

I am on a quick deadline so please reply to this thread! THANK
YOU. Also, please note that Mic does not provide back links, but
I will make you as findable as possible!

Here are my questions: 1. What’s your name, pronouns, title,
location, and any academic affiliation? 2. What do you think
that people fear most about having sex sober? 3. Do you think
there are benefits to sober sex? If so, what are they? 4.
Ironically, I feel less sexually inhibited when I’m sober
because I am better able to express my boundaries and that makes
me feel safe. Is that usually the case? Discuss. 5. Anything else?

PSYCHOLOGISTS: What is the connection between music and depression?

Name: Tracey Duncan BustleCategory: Biotech and Healthcare

Email: [email protected]

Media Outlet: Bustle

Deadline: 5:00 PM EST – 12 April

Query: When I’m sad, I listen to sad music. When I’m happy, I listen to
happy music. When I’m depressed, I don’t listen to any music at
all. This is such a reliable pattern in my life that I can use
my playlist usage as a barometer for my mental health. But I
don’t understand why it is that when I’m really struggling, no
music will bring me joy. Depressed people all over the internet
have the same question. It’s actually normal for depression to
cause a person to lose interest in things they usually enjoy.
This is actually a hallmark of depression and it’s called
anhedonia. But some research suggests that depression can also
cause a lack of interest in music specifically — amusica.
Ironically, though, music can also be used as a way to treat
depression and some studies suggest that listening to sad music
can make you feel better. This is all theoretically interesting,
but what is a depressed person who’s lost interest in music and
wants to get their — literal — groove back to do? Do we force
ourselves to listen to music? Is this a case for CBT or
medical/psychological intervention? I want to hear from
psychologists about the connection between amusica and
depression and what people can do to deal with it.

I am working on a quick deadline, so please reply directly to
this thread. I cannot provide backlinks, but will make you as
google able as possible. I am looking for experts who are able
to speak fluidly to a our young, curious audience without
jargon. THANK YOU.

Here are my questions: 1. What’s your name, pronouns, title,
location, and any academic affiliation? 2. Is it usual for
someone who is experiencing depression to lose interest in
music? 3. Is this loss of interest the same thing as amusica? If
it isn’t, can you explain what amusica is, please? 4. What do
you recommend people do if they are feeling depressed and want
to be able to listen to music again but feel apprehensive or
don’t have the same kind of emotional response to it as they
usually do? 5. One of the things I do when I find myself
becoming music-averse is play soft background music that doesn’t
have words. I guess it’s like a low grade exposure therapy? I’m
not sure. But sometimes it seems to help me remember that I like
nice music without bombarding me with sad or triggering lyrics.
Does this seem like a reasonable approach for others or is this
really just me? 6. Anything else on the topic?
