Monthly Member Meeting | Humor, Conflict Resolution, Mediation, and Experts: What do They Have in Common?

Virtual Event Virtual Event

November 21, 2023 @ 12:00 pm 1:30 pm EST

CLEs Approved for:

1 Credit General Law
1 Credit Marital & Family Law

Description:

Today’s session is going to focus on experts in mediation. Experts can be highly effective and powerful in helping to resolve issues if they are properly prepared, you have a mediator with knowledge in the area in order to ask appropriate questions, and the mediator can gain trust and encourage interactive dialogue between experts to educate all of the parties in mediation.  To promote trust and inspire humor can have a positive impact. We are all emotional beings and humor helps us cope. Experts can help diffuse tension, address unrealistic expectations, and clear up key points that may be misunderstood by the clients, the experts, or attorneys. This session will provide you with what you need to consider with the application of experts in mediations and how to help your clients when you are questioned about experts.

As a result of today’s session participants will be able to:

  • Consider the benefits of humor in conflict resolution and define conflict, alternative dispute resolution, and experts
  • Explain the benefits of using experts in mediation and address concerns typically raised by clients
  • Work more effectively with client and experts
  • Consider humor to help de-escalate, promote collaboration, and reduce tension and apply techniques to optimally make use of experts in on site and virtual mediations
  • Leave with some bonus items

Mike Gregory Bio:

Early in Mike’s career Mike would only let go of an issue in order to bite harder as an expert. As an expert witness that has prepared for, been deposed, and testified in the federal court system dozens of times, and as a manager who ran a litigation expert witness group with up to 21 experts with up 10 to 12 cases that were docketed at any given time over seven years, Mike brings a unique perspective to being an expert and using expert witnesses. A bit older now and hopefully a little wiser, Mike learned the benefits of collaboration in application to dispute resolution and never looked back.

Today he has a passion for collaboration and conflict resolution. Mike has completed over 2,500 mediations and negotiations over his career and written 12 books. As a Qualified Mediator with the Minnesota Supreme Court since 2004 and having opened up his own firm in 2011, Michael Gregory Consulting, LLC, Mike has worked with hundreds of experts in various forms of alternative dispute resolution as a mediator or while serving on a team as a negotiator or facilitator to help bring peace to at times very trying situations.

Mike has a BS, MS and MBA and on a personal note he and his wife of over 30 years are  able to spend time with their two grandchildren weekly.
